The indigenous Arabian title for the star was al-Ḏīḫ , 'the male hyena', which was bastardised into the modern title for the star. The star was part of an indigenous Arabian scene in the sky depicting a group of hyenas and their young. The female hyenas were found in Hercules and Boötes while Awlād al-Ḍibā’, 'the hyena whelps', were found in Boötes.
